Character Development: Nisse Character Design Experimentation

Starting the process of designing and colouring my Nisse character for this module I was having a lot of trouble with how I wanted my visuals to appear and the style and form of my character. I have previously created an overly-exaggerated full illustration of a gnome which I have discussed in a different post, however I wanted to explore something more ‘human’ and relatable to the design I was hoping to achieve.

Due to this I decided to create a small illustration to explore this which I found really helped me move forward in my development. Although I took a more realistic direction with the texturing on the hair I really like how I have chosen to colour my illustration, incorporating shadows underneath elements of the beard in order to create more depth within my work.

I’m not sure I like the fit of the hat I designed on this character as it seems unrealistic the way it is standing tall despite having the appearance of a fabric material. Due to this I will make sure to follow the composition of my hat in accordance with my detailing, perhaps I could maintain the pointed hat as long as I didn’t use such a detailed texture style within its design. I will explore this more within the development of my actual characters.

I do really like the textures used within this illustration and I'm glad I decided to explore this style, however I don’t think it is appropriate for my chosen purpose of designing an illustration for a children’s book as it is much more detailed than I have seen throughout my research. Due to this I will work towards merging the concept of detail whilst simplifying elements in order to try and design something which is more appropriate for the target audience.
