Personal Development: 30 Day Challenge - Prompt 19 Continuation

Following on from my 30 Day Challenge, prompt 19 designs, I wanted to continue working on designs which incorporated this character. The first illustration I decided to focus the composition around a single chick to emphasise the importance of the expression and text. I decided to create the text using a basic brush followed by a white underlay using a soft brush so that I could create the desired ‘sparkling’ effect. I thought this would be really cool to explore as I wanted to find a way to help the text stand out and look more interesting and considering the phrase is ‘always sparkle’ I feel having the text highlighted in this manner works really well.

The second image actually reused the base of my design from the challenge with improvements and additions so it could be used as the design for my partner’s birthday card. Considering I was unable to get him a store-bought card due to Covid-19 I still wanted to have one to give him, so I decided to create my own. This design was perfect for the purpose so I chose to incorporate some fun birthday elements such as the chicks each having their own unique action. The purple hat is blowing a party popper, which scared the green hatted chick hence their hat is falling off and the red hatted chick has just returned to the frame after sneaking away to eat icing off the birthday cake. I thought this was really fun and created motion within the design which helped it feel much more interactive and appealing.

I definitely need to work on my typography and calligraphy skills which may be something I choose to work on during the summer holidays as I feel it is definitely becoming a predominant feature in a lot of my illustrations. I feel the illustration is let down by my handwriting which is why I feel it is important to develop these skills as it is an important ability when working commercially or with clients to be able to provide this service and help stand out from the crowd.

I’m much happier with the addition of clouds into my 3rd illustration using these characters, considering I hadn’t took note of this from the original in my 2nd design. I think the whole environment works a lot better with the inclusion of the clouds as it makes it appear much more realistic. I made sure the opacity of the clouds remained low so they appeared faint and airy rather than adding heavily stylised versions, which I feel would have been too bold against the rest of the environment.
