Personal Development: 30 Day Challenge - Day 19

An inside joke within my home between me and my partner is around chicks and ducks, which is what inspired me for the creation of Day 19’s prompt ‘multiple’. I chose to develop a scene of 3 chicks out in the sunlight of the day. I wanted this illustration to make you feel happy when looking at it and I think I achieved that due to my style for the chosen characters with their simplistic expressions and shapes.

I really like how this turned out although I feel the lighting could be improved slightly as the directional light appears to be too high opacity currently and creates a dramatic white light whereas I would’ve preferred this design to use warmer lighting after looking at it complete.

I think this design could also be improved had I chose to incorporate clouds in the background within the sky as it would have helped make the environment feel more relatable. I had chosen not to incorporate clouds originally as I had attempted to make my composition appear as though it were a closer top-down view of the chicks, rather than from straight on however I’m not sure this effect was achieved.

I would love to continue working with this character as it is heavily relatable to me and I feel the concept works well for a vast audience range, meaning it remains relevant and appealing to a much broader audience. I would be interested in developing this character in different environments and styles to see how far I can develop them and perhaps one day they will become a character in one of my very own illustrated children’s books.
