Academic Tutorial 01/03/2021

 In preparation for my academic tutorial I was asked to complete these questions: 

1) What is going well?

I am really pleased I have been able to focus on not only my traditional skills during this project, but designs which encompass a more realistic human anatomy as this is an area I am trying hard to improve on. I really like the final character designs I have managed to come up with and feel I have been thorough in my concept ideas and development. 

2) What has been problematic with your projects?

I feel I have been attempting to be too detailed in certain areas which have led me to having much less time to complete the final illustration but I feel I will still manage to complete this as I have been able to catch up. I just need to make sure in future that I do not become too fixated on certain areas for instance I was struggling with my initial character silhouettes as I didn't have access to feedback as it was half term, however I was able to resolve this by gathering a lot more reference material which seemed to be really helpful in organising my thoughts thankfully. 

3) What are your targets for the next 2 weeks?

My targets for these next 2 weeks before my deadline are to complete my thumbnail sketches for my illustration composition, gather the necessary real life reference photography, create my completed illustration.

4) Have you been regularly posting to your blog?

I have been trying to keep up to date with my blog as much as possible, to do this I have been creating the blogs and importing the images I wish to discuss. However, a lot of work is needed to complete the written component of these posts. Due to the injury of my hand back in December it was essential for me to focus my time on my other modules which had much shorter deadlines. Due to trying to manage this I have fallen behind greatly with my blog but I am hoping to work on this on my next half term. 

5) Are you keeping on top of issued tasks?

Most of the time yes, I missed one call last week about the expressions task so I still need to watch this recorded session as I wanted to ensure my character designs were 100% ready before moving onto this process so I could work more efficiently on this task. I am planning to work on this tomorrow once I have gathered my reference imagery. I am struggling to keep on top of the blog, although my hand is still damaged I'm happy with how well I have kept up with this module but I am concerned I haven't been able to get through as much as I would have liked. For example I would have liked to include a lot more fully typed artist research as I'm unsure how it is marked without this write up but I am struggling with typing. 

6) Do you have sufficient R&D to support your project and clarify your intentions?

I believe so yes, I have focused on the use of secondary research for this project using a lot more books than online resources as I really wanted to focus on the individual artist characters, and I felt I had a much greater opportunity to do this using books. 

7) Do you have any areas of your projects that you need further support with in terms of theory and practical?

I would have liked to have had some form of digital sessions during this project, even if they were pre-recorded and provided on Teams ready for us to discuss during our next session. 

8) What is your target grade for remaining modules?

My target grades for the upcoming modules will always remain 70+ as I am trying really hard to improve my illustration and presentation skills. I feel I am definitely achieving this so far in comparison to the work in my first year and can definitely see an improvement in the visuals of my work and I intend to keep up the hard work.

Character Design and SMART Targets: Illustration Attempt Two

Firstly,  I am so much more impressed with the visuals of this design; it feels so much more appropriate for the chosen target audience yet remains visually pleasing to all ages. I am so glad I returned to the initial phases and removed the harsh black outlining on my design, I feel even just making this alteration alone greatly enhanced my illustration by making it much less harsh and more realistic to the eye. However, once I had removed the outlines from around my wall and floor I noticed the separation of the areas became unclear and flat. Due to this I decided to add a skirting board around the bottom of the wall as this is not only a common design feature so will remain recognisable, but also forced the two areas to stand out due to the heavily contrasting border. SMART Target: 3D Visualisation: Crab Noodle Box

Following the completion of my first two concepts, whilst taking a break from artist research, I wanted to experiment with an entirely different creature. The new theme I have chosen to explore is that of molluscs and crustaceans. The first creature I have decided to create was the crab flavoured noodles. I really like how I have extended the design of this creature to have a more visible body as I feel it makes for a highly interesting design having all of the claws in view. I made sure to use reference material of both real life and cartoon style crabs to help inspire my design and help me form the correct anatomy for my crab. I really like how this design extends to the entire dimension of the box. However, once I managed to print out my design in order to check its functionality I found that due to the curved features the sides did not match up correctly and caused the design to be rather displeasing. Weekly Reflection: Life Drawing - Session 2

This session was much more relaxed, due to the people I was surrounded by and the calming music that was being played in the room. It really helped being given tasks which were aimed towards creating a humorous result rather than something which was meant to be more realistic. I found that by taking a less serious approach my drawings seemed to greatly improve. I also really enjoyed using the variety of non-conventional mediums such as oil pastels and transfer paper as I feel these mediums helped me focus more on the form, yet I did not have to be 100% accurate as for instance the oil pastels are quite broad whereas you cannot see what you have drawn at all underneath the transfer paper until you remove it. I really enjoyed this session until it came to drawing in very short time periods like 1 second, where I noticed my anxiety sky rocketed again and I became closed off due to the serious tone the class took on again.
