Personal Development: 30 Day Challenge - Day 14
Coming up to day 14 and the prompt was ‘time’ considering I had already created an hourglass for one of my prompts I decided to create a more literal concept, designing a pocket watch.
Initially
I had trouble creating the numerals so that they followed the circular frame
correctly, but overall I am really happy with how this design turned out. I
found by leaving an edge of highlight between the areas of shadow on the left
hand side, it created a much more realistic perception of depth within the
clocks frame. I shall try to remember this within my future designs to help
ensure they are as effective as this design.
I
really enjoyed the process of creating this illustration, however if I were to
repeat this in the future I would love to have explored the inclusion of some
form of chain protruding out of the oval background, as I feel this would help
create a much more fluid design, although I still like the illustration without
this component.
I
really like my choice of colours for this design as well as I wanted to create
a slightly aged appearance which I feel I managed to achieve by using a
slightly rustic / aged gold theme. This worked really well with both the object
and the theme as it implies that time is endless and ageless.
I
am extremely proud of how many days I have managed to complete so far, so often
I become distracted and don’t end up completing these types of challenges but
having almost made it halfway I wanted to take a moment to appreciate my
dedication and strive for improvement.
I
feel this challenge, although focused on a particular style of illustration,
has helped me in a variety of ways as I have had to discover how to draw
instantly without using black outlines as a guideline, as well as having to
come up with interesting themes and concepts and many more. I would like to
continue with these types of challenges in the future should I manage to
complete this one as I feel it has helped me in my traditional skill set. I
would love to explore a more environmental based challenge as this is something
I definitely haven’t focused on before. I feel my illustrations often appear
like spot illustrations rather than completed designs as I don’t utilise
environments to further develop my concepts, which I would like to work on
moving forward.
