Editorial Illustration: Evaluation
For this module I was required to create at least 3 illustrations across a front cover and double page spread based around one movie from the selection of 3, which could then be used as editorial illustrations within the ‘Little White Lies’ magazine. The movie options available were The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Birds and Tetsuo: Iron Man. I decided to go with Tetsuo: Iron Man as my film choice as I felt it would be the most challenging to work with considering it is a Japanese film with very little narrative and is filmed in black and white.
I am pleased with this choice as it forced me to work on my
values and understanding of limited colour palettes, helping me to respond to
the criteria at an industry standard. For this module I had to make sure to incorporate
the opinions and feedback of others considering the purpose of my designs and
them needing to appear attractive and enticing to an audience.
I’m not sure how I feel about my final illustrations and
feel there is probably a lot I would go back and change however, I was working
on this module with a fractured hand and was struggling to balance my work load
at the time. Due to this I’m impressed I still managed to complete the module
with all 3 required illustrations and to this standard.
If I were to repeat this process in the future, I feel it
may be more visually effective to lighten the foreground of my double page
spread even further to ensure the text remains clear considering it is the most
important elements of the page.
I do however really love the use and placement of my wires
as they remain consistent throughout each of the pages which I find appealing
as it creates points of interest and recognition without overcrowding the rest
of the information. I’m also really happy I managed to include an illustration on
my double page spread which conveys the location of the film as this provides
the reader with more context if they haven’t seen the film before. Although if I
were to repeat this process I would create a higher contrast between the
flowers held by the villain and the background as I feel they become a bit lost
against the background of the illustration since they utilise a similar colour
palette.
I found the concept of working to a template very interesting but I’m unsure following the completion of this module whether Editorial illustration is something I would be interested in pursuing in the future, I prefer the freedom and imagination of children’s publishing but I don’t want to limit myself yet, until I have perhaps completed a similar task without a handicap as this may have affected my overall opinion of the process.
