Commercial Practice: Collage Project - Day 2
I
used all of the materials available to me to try and create interesting marks
which could be used within my collage for instance, watercolours, inks, pens
etc. which were then combined to create more fluid motions.
I
really enjoyed the mark making session and am looking forward to re-using these
elements in the future as I feel they could work well in a variety of projects
considering the various styles and tones I have managed to create.
Considering my theme was based around the themes of both exploration and survival I wanted to discuss the controversial topic within my college about how in we overwork ourselves in a commercial society in order to drag ourselves towards our ideal world and self of creativity and exploration but in reality we end up losing what makes us unique by becoming slaves to our pay check which is perceived as a modern day messiah and end up slaving away with false emotions towards a dimming future.
The phrase I chose to incorporate states "The Diligent Worker Prospers", aimed towards the lies we’re told all the way through life where the only way to succeed and be able to explore the world is if we work harder than other whereas the highlighted area reads 'HELP', which discusses how we overwork ourselves, neglecting our physical and mental health to ‘achieve success’.I created each of my layers separately for my collage to ensure I could alter their placement, I used blue tac to hold everything down rather than gluing. I also liked how by using blue tac it left areas where my papers would lift slightly creating a much more textured and 3D appearance within my digital version. I separated the top, face drawing, face colour and eyes and found this extremely useful when on my digital version as I was able to alter each area separately and efficiently whereas I would need to separate them individually digitally had I chose to create one singular layer traditionally which I feel would have been a lot more difficult. I love this creation, I love how rough I’ve managed to make it appear and how it truly feels like there is a looming cage surrounding the central gender neutral character, making this feel relatable to a much broader audience. I love how I have been able to merge both traditional and digital methods to create something much more complex and refined, without having to concern myself about anatomy and structure. Considering these are areas of my work I typically struggle with it was both interesting and exciting being able to work with pre-existing assets from photographs and gave me a bunch of ideas on how I could take these collages one step further and even refine them completely digitally to create a one off original and print series in the future.
I definitely feel
this is a technique I will continue working with in the future, as I found the
entire process therapeutic and enjoyable something which isn’t common as I often
become overwhelmed with my traditional drawings.
