Character Design: Final Illustration

For my final attempt I began by fixing the areas I had noticed previously such as lowering the opacity of the couch texture, which I feel helped make it look much more realistic in comparison. I also decided to add some texturing around the outside of the vent and hidden character as I felt this would further improve the aesthetics of my design by making both the foreground and background much more cohesive in style.

I chose to re-add the paper texture over the top of my design in the end as I felt my previous design looked bare without it, however now I feel it may be slightly distracting due to the linear flow of the texture which doesn’t seem to match my 3D design. I chose to add this originally as I wanted to insinuate the book having been printed already onto heavily textured paper as I felt this would be an interesting visual concept, however I feel it may not have worked as intended.

By adding this texture it also darkened the orange overlay again, making the time of day appear slightly warmer but I wasn’t too displeased by this.

Finally I decided to explore the use of textures on the back wall and carpet to help make them appear less flat now in comparison to the rest of the design as well. Perhaps if I had more time I would have returned once being able to take some time away from this visual to make alterations again. However, due to the deadline this version ended up being the final illustration I submitted. I am not displeased by this though, considering this was my first ever attempt at completing a full illustration utilising a lot of new techniques, such as the overall visual style, the creation of a 3D environment and the development of multiple characters I am really pleased with how it turned out. I would be keen to continue working on this project in the future as part of a personal project during the summer holidays if the opportunity doesn’t arise beforehand as I thoroughly enjoyed this process and would like to continue developing this set of skills.
