Commercial Practice: Chosen Specialism

The chosen specialism I am aiming towards developing my art skills for is the creation of children’s picture books. I love the concept of influencing young minds and would love to share my knowledge and experiences in a happy and harmonious way which turns difficulty into beauty and empowerment to all who read them. I am especially interested in focusing on the creation of younger children’s books as I really resonate with how essential those early years of development are and how important it can be to set down good boundaries and moral guidelines that will help children as they age.

The main element I wish to focus on during my proper introduction to children’s illustration which I will focus on in Level 6, is improving the visibility and representation of wider disabilities which will not only create characters children with these disabilities can use as relatable role models, but also educate other children about the importance of compassion, understanding and acceptance.

Due to these goals I have decided to begin this within my commercial project by reusing the story from my previous character design module in order to create 6-10 fully illustrated pages for my first attempt at a children’s picture book. Considering I have never attempted to create this quantity of work before and I am also working to develop a new set of stylistic skills I am hoping I can achieve success in this module by working hard and simplifying my concepts in order to make them suitable for the target audience whilst achieving a standard set to the industry.

I am interested in creating picture books with limited text and will likely aim to self-publish my first book, but I will continue to investigate and explore the options available to me for printing finished products as I move forward.

Growing up with hidden disabilities myself, it was tough as a young child with other children around who just couldn’t understand. I feel that now due to the wide developments in society regarding inclusion and diversity the education of younger audiences on various disabilities is an essential part of growth as it will limit those feelings of difference and confusion for both parties. I feel this can only work towards helping young minds and I would love to be able to make such an important difference with my illustrations.
