Personal Development: 30 Day Challenge - Day 4

The next prompt I had to work on was ‘Moment’, I felt this theme was much broader and open to my own interpretation compared to the previous day’s I have completed so far. Due to this I chose to represent the importance of capturing a moment in time, which led me to the idea of creating an hour glass which not only physically represents a moment but psychologically represents an individual’s own time and how they spend it in my opinion. I feel this illustration is a lot more metaphorical to how we never know how much time we truly have left so it is important to make sure every moment counts.

I really enjoyed the creation of this design due to its personal resonation with me. I found it really interesting trying to represent wood using my chosen style as I hadn’t wanted to incorporate any further detailing which may take away from the graphic simplicity I was aiming for. I made sure to maintain realism within this illustration by separating the lower layers and having them use the darker shading colour to ensure the depth was visible within the design.

I decided against including a secondary background or a gradient within this design as I really liked the overall visuals without, and how simplistic such a meaningful message felt to me.

I really like how this illustration turned out, especially the sand within the glass; I feel this looks really interesting especially since I managed to create the grain texture for the sand falling between the two glass areas.

If I were to redo this design though I would likely reduce the opacity of the glass further to make it appear more translucent and realistic. I would also alter the lighting on the very bottom left hand side of the illustration as there is an area which has been darkened despite it being in direct contact with lighting.

I am still working on developing my skills within this method of illustration though so it is important to be able to identify these strengths and weaknesses so I can improve upon them within my next design. Considering how quickly I am working through these designs I am hoping my skills develop rather quickly considering the quick repetition of practice.
