Personal Development: 30 Day Challenge - Day 2
The
second prompt for this challenge was knife, I had considered creating a
basic kitchen knife for this challenge however I wanted to challenge myself.
Due to this I decided on a multi-chrome Karambit knife as I was interested in
exploring the curvature on the knife as I felt it would create a more
interesting visual as well as the multi-chrome colouring as this would enable
me to explore a new technique of colouring.
I
maintained the same simplistic background of an oval within my square canvas,
seeing as these will all be made to be compatible with Instagram, as I like the
consistency however I will be altering the colours to match the chosen subject
of the drawing.
To
create the multi-chrome effect using Procreate I began by selecting the
variation of colours I wanted to use, followed by the liquefy option to create
the desired rainbow effect. I then added shading to this using a plain white
and grey base to create the perception of lighting, to ensure it maintained the
same textured appearance of the rest of the design. However, I was also able to
achieve this further by then adding a slight noise effect over the top of this
layer as well. I preferred the aesthetics upon adding this as originally I had
planned on keeping the blade looking ‘shiny’ but in comparison to the rest of
the design it just appeared strange, whereas by including the noise filter I was
able to create a much more consistent style within my design.
I
really like how this attempt turned out and the lighting variation I managed to
capture within each layer of the blades handle, making it appear much more 3D.
However if I were to repeat this process in the future I would like to explore
the liquify filter more as there is an area on the top of the handle which
appears slightly lost. This may be because the top colour was too light for the
placement of my secondary lighting or the lighter colour itself not being as
effective on the outer corners of the design, so this would be an area I would
need to explore when styling like this in the future.
I
also noticed there should be darker lighting on one side of the upper grips as
the lighting would only naturally hit one side. Regardless I am happy with how
my illustration turned out for my second attempt using this textured style.
