Processes and Practices: Evaluation
Processes and practices was my first module of the
year as well as the first I was working on 100% remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
I was really impressed with the overall quality and development of this module
and am thoroughly impressed by my commitment and motivation to strive for the
creation of multiple experiments and mediums which helped me to fully explore
the different processes and practices available within illustration.
I thoroughly enjoyed this project and found a new
passion in the development and creation of surface pattern which isn’t an area
of illustration I have previously worked in before. I would be keen to continue
the development of surface patterns following my explorations into this module
and it has helped me to identify ways of working which don’t necessarily
utilise digital media.
I was unable to complete some of the printing
methods due to working remotely which I was disappointed with, however I was
still able to learn how to set up my documents ready for printing. For instance
the layout of my final illustration ready for Risograph printing where each of
the colours has to be separated by layers. I would love to see how these prints
turned out but unfortunately it seems I won’t be able to achieve this until I return
to university once the pandemic has calmed.
I created a wide variety of illustrations in
preparation for print, risograph and lino printing however I think my favourite
is the image below. I’m really happy with this illustration and love how I took
reference from my artist research on effective compositions in order to
influence the layout of my final design, I really like the way I have
incorporated elements which extend out of the border as it helps create depth
and interest within my design. Of course I understand the colours used may not
come out exactly the same once printed using the Risograph but as a stand-alone
print I feel my choice of colours worked extremely well. I tried to work with a
limited colour palette of yellow, red and blue which I then layered to create the
accent colours like purple and green. This was a really interesting way to work
as I needed to create each of the layers individually before merging them as a
single colour layer to ensure I could alter each of the opacity levels
individually in order to create the desired results.
If I were to repeat this process in the future I would
like to explore the development of my lemon seeds as I feel they look a bit too
plain against the rest of the heavily detailed designs. I would also like to
explore the removal of the thick black outlines to see how this would affect the
overall aesthetics of my illustration.
I am glad I had the opportunity to explore and investigate the many processes and practices available to me as an illustrator and I’m keen to continue their use and practice in the future. To do this I will attempt to use different mediums during my development as well as aiming to work on the use of more interesting composition styles throughout my future projects.
