Evaluation: Introduction To Illustration

During this module I was tasked to create a risograph print alongside a dinner guest setting illustration.

Originally I started this task late as I had not yet enrolled onto the course however I managed to catch up by using methods and techniques I was moderately comfortable with. Although I had not used my digital art skills for quite some time I found I instinctively travelled towards this medium for the creation of my risograph as I was worried about having a piece ready for print in time.

Due to this I was aware that I needed to try and focus more on the use of traditional techniques during the creation of my dinner guests module as I had not showcased this set of skills enough during my risograph. Following this observation I made sure to create all of my assets using traditional methods and mediums for my dinner guest setting before editing and refining them on the computer.

Overall I enjoyed these two projects however, I found I really struggled with the perspective drawing and traditional methods during my second print creation. This will be something in which I must actively work on throughout all of my upcoming modules in order to improve my skill set and become more confident in using such unfamiliar techniques.

For my risograph I was not entirely happy with how the design came out as I was unclear on how it all worked so I feel I did not utilise a variety of techniques and layering methods which could have improved the overall outcome of this illustration. I did however, decide to also create a digitally coloured version as I felt the style of my illustration would have been better suited to this printing medium. I wanted to create both versions of the same print so that I could compare the two in order to identify more clearly how visually different the two methods were.

Overall I am happy with the layout and style of my risograph print although there are areas which could be improved on, for instance I do not like that there is so much negative space and everything feels condensed into the centre. However, the overall fluidity of my design helps reduce this factor when looking from fresh eyes.

I decided to create two illustrations for my dinner guest setting, however the two I ended up with were not the two I had hoped for. I was aiming to create two merging environments based around my concept that Alice in Wonderland was actually trapped in a mental asylum and it was due to all of the medication she was on alongside her fragile state of mind, that had conjured up the realm of Wonderland.

In the end because I was running out of time due to having spent so much longer trying to traditionally sketch and then refine each asset, due to my lack of skills within the medium I was only able to colour up one environment. However, to ensure my concept was not entirely lost I decided to create an almost 3D visual of my creation in order to provide the appearance of a drugged up haze.

I decided to submit both versions of my illustration as I felt they both provided a completely different emotion and perspective on the same setting which I thought was extremely interesting. In the drugged version it is almost difficult to look at, and causes a sense of panic and confusion whereas the normal version appears quite fantastical and welcoming. I love that I was able to create two completely contrasting emotions and environments through my use of layer and colour alterations and would love to explore this illustration style of creating an RGB channel further in the future.
