Research and Analysis: A Flame In The Flood
I wanted to include this game as part of my research as I felt very inspired and captivated by their design choices and really wanted to explore it further. It consists of two different art styles which merge together perfectly, the loading screens share a more graphical approach whereas the actual game play is a lot darker in design. With various creatures trying to attack you, and uncontrollable rain storms, this game really doesn't mess around.
The title screen is perfect as it invites you in with its simplistic map and bold colours, but what waits for you on the other side is a whole load of challenges. The game play is based around a third person view, however one wrong move and you're all the way back at the start so survival is essential. This was an interesting take on the functionality of the game and I feel it works to really push the player to make sure their character survives, as there's nothing worse than making great progress for it all to be lost if your player dies. This makes the game much more challenging and playable in my opinion and I really enjoyed my experience with it.
1) Who is it aimed at?
It is advised that the game is suitable for ages 10+ due to the violent nature of some scenes
2) Art Style
The games art style was inspired by the work of Scott Sinclair, with his exaggerated yet distinctive illustrative style. The game is based on a post-apocalyptic journey so merging this overly painted, exaggerated style worked perfectly.
The game manages to merge elements of realism alongside hand painted exaggerated elements to create a truly immersive environment and characters.
3) Production Technique
The game was created using Unreal Engine a software I have not explored before.
4) How This Will Affect My Work
I have been wanting to take a break from my cute designs as they are no longer developing as I would like and I feel this may be due to my constant working on one particular theme. I feel that my inspiration from this game will help me reopen my creative mind and explore a variety of styles and themes once again. I would also love to explore the development of seamless looping animations in the future, such as within the loading screen as the campfire flames dance, it is a simple animation but beautifully executed and I feel I may be able to create something inspired by this.
Although I am studying illustration I feel knowing the fundamentals of animation is important and will help open up more job opportunities in the future.
