SMART Targets: Narrative and Sequential Imagery - Digital Workshop: Create our Environment

Today during our digital workshop we were instructed to digitally construct one of the three environments we had decided upon for our projects narrative triptych sequence. I decided to create my third environment setting which would be the inner cave, which I was aiming to portray as the hidden paradise. I decided to create my third environment as I felt it was the one I had spent the least amount of time focusing on up until this point and I was struggling to visualise how I wanted my scene to end up.

I found that by creating my inner cave environment using my digital skills was extremely useful as it is a medium I am much more comfortable with compared to my traditional skill set. However, I am still aiming for my final version of this illustration to be completed using completely traditional mediums by painting them, as I feel that throughout this project I have really developed my skills using this method and would really like to continue to progress it further. I used the methods which I had learned during the previous digital workshops in order to complete this, which really helped me to digest what I had learned.

I am really happy with the end results of my environment mock up as I was able to combine the majority of my newly learned digital skills in order to create a much more visually appealing and interesting piece.

Following the completion of my illustration I then explored how varying levels of hue would affect the overall mood of my design and was very happy with the results as it maintained a clean and appealing finish regardless of colouring. There were some options which I was not as keen on for example where it caused the majority of my design to turn either olive green or purple. I feel this is because I personally do not find those colours attractive however, I was extremely happy to see that due to my lighting which I have now managed to correct in comparison to my initial tree silhouette experiment, no matter how I altered the final product it remained a highly attractive piece.

My SMART target for this would be that I would like to continue using photography as the base of my illustrations as I felt this technique was extremely helpful and enabled me to understand the form and structure of what I was designing a lot better.

Pink and Orange Colouring: I like how warm this setting appears, it feels very magical
Olive Green colouring: I was unsure of this colour scheme at first
Blue colouring: I really like the way the colours work on this one as the background elements have a complimentary purple hue
Yellow and Pink colouring: I think I prefer this colour scheme to the orange one as it is not as visually intense due to the cool undertone of the yellow
